ACE COMBAT 8 Beginner Guide: Controls & Flight Basics
Official basic-control guidance; use the bindings shown for your device. Exact game build not specified.
At a glance
Choose your control style separately from difficulty. Standard makes turning more direct; Expert uses roll and pitch for fuller maneuvering control. Pilot is the official default recommendation for newcomers.
Choose controls, then difficulty
Standard: moving the left stick left or right turns the aircraft directly. Expert: roll first, then use pitch to turn. Expert gives you fuller maneuvering control, but control style and difficulty are separate settings.
The official difficulty guide recommends Pilot as the default starting point for new players. Rookie is aimed at following the story; check its assistance option for reducing collision damage from terrain and buildings. Veteran suits experienced players, while Elite offers a greater challenge. Difficulty can be changed during play.
Use the button mapping shown in your own control settings. A button listed for one platform or controller is not a universal HOTAS, PC and console binding.
Prepare for the mission
- Read the mission objective and identify the main threats.
- Choose an aircraft suited to the targets.
- Choose the corresponding special weapon.
- Combine aircraft parts for the sortie.
Additional aircraft are unlocked with MRP earned from missions. Apply this preparation order once the relevant choices are available: the prologue and early missions should not be treated as unrestricted aircraft-selection screens.
Attack, evade and use your wingmen
Accelerate to close the gap to an enemy aircraft, adjust your attack angle and use missiles or the machine gun. Approaching from behind helps you line up the attack described in the official walkthrough.
Use chaff and flares against incoming missiles. Rolls and loops are part of maneuvering, so keep nearby terrain in view as you practice. As flight leader, order wingmen to attack or provide cover according to the threat.
When something feels wrong
If turning feels unfamiliar, check Standard versus Expert first. If combat is overwhelming, adjust difficulty. If aircraft or equipment choices are unavailable, follow the game’s guidance rather than assuming an advanced aircraft is required.
This is a primer on official controls and sortie preparation, not a mission-by-mission walkthrough or a tested first-save-to-results route.
